Wood Preservation Methods
The Biological research of wood and it’s renewable material is what is referred to as wood science. In other words, the term wood science can also be known as wood technology. Wood is treated as a material in direct comparison with other products. Materials properties, ease of it being worked on and its value are among the few properties which are compared against those of wood and other materials. The utilization of technology gives wood an upper hand in most of this comparison. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. It is also based on renewable resources. All the parts of wood can be put into use, and this makes it a better fit than other materials which most of their byproducts are a waste.
For your wooden products and house to stay for long and have a good appearance it needs to be protected. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The moisture courses the timber to decay and the insects eat through the wood. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The species of the wood and the application of the wood will determine how many chemicals will be used on the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. This method is being accepted fast because is friendly to wooden fasteners. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. The difference between this method and the other copper-based methods is that the copper is used as a metal rather than a dissolved material. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The wood products protected using this method last longer.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. When you use this method to treat wood, then you will not need to worry for at least ten years.
